Planning a Bangkok trip with your elderly parents? What are some good activities?

A long-tail boat ride through the canals is worth considering. You sit the whole time, it's shaded, and you get breeze off the water so it doesn't feel as brutal as walking around. Hire a private boat from Tha Chang pier for around 1,500 to 2,000 baht for two hours, and you can stop at the Royal Barge Museum or the Artist's House in Thonburi if they're up for a short wander.

For something fully indoor, the Jim Thompson House near National Stadium is a good shout. The tour is guided and seated for parts of it, plus the whole compound is shaded by trees. Pair it with lunch at one of the air-conditioned restaurants on Soi Kasemsan 2 and you've filled a comfortable morning.

One practical tip, plan your outings for early morning or after 4pm. The midday heat in March and April is genuinely dangerous for older folks, and most temples are at their worst then anyway.

The malls are your best friend for this. Take them to Icon Siam or Central Embassy, you can wander in air conditioning for hours and there's plenty of seating, plus the food courts are great for a break. A Chao Phraya dinner cruise in the evening is also nice since they get to see the temples lit up without any walking.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
