honestly Bangkok's got a decent underground scene but you gotta know where to look. The Overstay in Ekkamai does punk and hardcore shows pretty regularly, they've got a small stage in the back and the vibe is grimy in a good way. For jazz check out Bamboo Bar in the Mandarin Oriental, it's expensive and touristy but they get legit international players passing through. If you want something more experimental and local, Jam in Sathorn does improvised stuff on sunday nights, it's a tiny place with no cover and the musicians are usually way better than they should be for that price.

there's a small venue called de commune in thonglor that does a weird mix of experimental and punk stuff, it's mostly a cafe during the day but they clear the tables at night. also keep an eye on what's happening at the jam factory down near bang rak, it's a warehouse space that does monthly experimental nights with local noise bands and sometimes touring acts from japan. for pure jazz, brownstone in phra khanong has a different trio every night and the food is actually decent, it's way less stuffy than the hotel jazz spots

if you're into the heavier side of things check out The Rock Pub near the Victory Monument area, it's been around forever and they do metal and punk shows most weekends. cover is usually like 200 baht and they've got a solid beer selection. for something weirder, there's a spot called Blaq Lyfe in Ari that occasionally hosts noise and experimental acts, it's more of an art space than a proper venue so shows can be hit or miss but when they hit it's great. also if you're around during the weekend, there's a DIY space near Hua Lamphong called Safe Room that does house shows for screamo and emo bands, real underground vibes with maybe 30 people packed in there

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
