I want to learn about Khmer heritage in Thailand. Where should I go?

I'm also doing research in Cambodia, but want to explore the Thai experience/history of this heritage. What are some places/things I should do to learn more about this while in the country? if you want to understand the living khmer heritage beyond temples, head to the town of sukhothai's sister city, si satchanalai, but actually better is the old quarter of chanthaburi. the khmer community there has a small but solid ancestral museum near the river, and you can see how khmer weaving techniques survived in local silk production. grab a bowl of nom phrik kapi at the morning market and chat with the older vendors, many still speak khmer at home. for a deeper historical hit, the prasat muang tam ruins in buriram have some of the best preserved lotus-bud towers and a baray that still floods for rice farming, showing how the khmer hydraulic system shaped thai agriculture for centuries

honestly i'd skip the big temple sites for a sec and head to the Khmer Museum in Surin province. it's smaller and less touristy than Phimai but gives you a real sense of how Khmer culture still lives in daily life here, not just in ruins. they have old tools, textiles, and even recordings of traditional music that show the crossover between Thai and Khmer communities. if you can time it for November, the Surin Elephant Round-up includes Khmer-style processions and dance performances that feel way more alive than a museum exhibit.

For Khmer heritage in Thailand, start with the Prasat Hin Phimai historical park in Nakhon Ratchasima. It's a 12th century Khmer temple that connects directly to Angkor Wat via the ancient Khmer highway, and the site has a small museum explaining the religious and political ties between the two kingdoms. The Phanom Rung sanctuary in Buriram is another must-see, built on an extinct volcano with incredible views, and you can see how the Khmer adapted Hindu cosmology into the architecture. If you want to dig into the more recent history, the National Museum in Bangkok has a dedicated Khmer art gallery with sandstone carvings and lintels that were brought from the northeast provinces.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
