What do you do during the day? Looking for inspiration.

I spent the most part of the year in Tokyo and I felt there is so much more to do. Even hiking (Fuji, okutama), camping (Nikko), renting a crazy powerful car / motorbike (skyline), or just walking around interesting city districts (Akihabara), are great options in the Tokyo area which are missing here.

I'd love some inspiration.

if you're missing the tokyo thing of just wandering weird districts, the area around Wang Lang market on the Thonburi side scratches that itch. take the ferry from Tha Chang for like 4 baht, cross the river and it's a totally different city, narrow sois full of food stalls and old shophouses. Siriraj hospital area behind it too.

for the car itch, there's a place out near Bang Na that rents proper motorbikes for track days at Bira, or you can just do the kanchanaburi run on a rented bike, the road past Nakhon Pathom is decent and empty on weekdays. not skyline level but way better than sitting in sukhumvit traffic

also dont sleep on the museums. the Siriraj medical museum is genuinely one of the strangest afternoons you can have in asia, and the jim thompson house is a nice slow morning if youve never done it

There's a whole green side to Bangkok people sleep on. Bang Krachao is the obvious one but you can also cycle the old Thai parliament area near Kiakkai, or take a longtail boat through the khlongs on the Thonburi side where it still feels like the 80s. If you want that Tokyo energy fix, Talad Noi and the riverside around it has the same wandering-around-weird-districts vibe.

get a scooter and just ride out along the river to the green lung, or hop a train to ayutthaya & rent a bike there. bang krachao is basically our version of a weekend ride, flat trails through jungle with cool little cafes. also khao yai is only 3 hrs by car if u want actual hiking & camping

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
