I'm a Thai loco, born and raised. I recently realize that I really enjoy advising people when they're travelling to places I been too. And giving them my insider tips (even if it's just like silly little shortcuts to places). It just make me happy to see them excite and the things I'm excited about. Usually I'm in Bangkok but i recently moved for university, so every term break or so. Friends would come back to travel with me in bkk and they said I made the trip fun (might just be common courtesy to say that buttt it really help fuel my passion of helping people travel). Im in my second year of my uni but I managed my time well enough that I have a decent amount of time free so I created an instagram account to help people who plan to travel to Thailand (more specifically Bangkok). Like the DMs are open so you can ask me any questions you have and if i happen to be available. I'll help you translate badly translate signs and information on the spot. This is just my passion and it's kinda like a hobby so if you're lost in bkk and don't know what to do. Free feel to find me on instagram Hey_its.Leia (it's a picture of a cat). I also post about random places I go and restaurant with my own personal review and opinions. I also plan to post sale deal and event alerts on there if I know about them. honestly respect for doing this, the amount of bad info tourists get from tiktok influencers who spent 3 days in bangkok is wild. if you ever need a backup for questions about old town or the khlongs near banglamphu i know that area pretty well. followed you on ig, that cat picture is cute

That's really cool you're doing that. I think there's a big gap for honest, non-sponsored advice for Bangkok since a lot of the stuff online is just paid promos now. Your friends are probably right about the trips being more fun with someone who actually knows the spots.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
