Mostly sexpats and all the seedy stuff that happens around Nana/Soi Cowboy. Awesome malls and parks tho. Anyway, this time i will be in BKK for 4 nights with my girlfriend and wanted to try a different neighborhood but dont know where. We are looking for a mix of local restaurants and bars (whether its live music or just a normal bar scene). I really liked the Khaosan road area but was only there during the day. Other than Sukhimvit, Chinatown, and Banglamphu i dont know where to go. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Try Ari. It's a bit north of the center, accessible via BTS Ari station, and it's got a completely different vibe from Sukhumvit. You'll find plenty of local restaurants and bars tucked along the sois, and the crowd is mostly young Thais and expats who actually live here, not the Nana crowd. Walk down Soi Ari and you'll hit spots like Lay Lao for Thai food or VELO for a proper coffee and cocktail mix. It's not a party zone like Khaosan, so if you want late night chaos you'd need a cab, but for dinners and drinks it's solid.

if you want more of a local feel without the tourist chaos, check out the area around Ekkamai or On Nut. ekkamai has a ton of cool hidden bars and restaurants that feel less like a scene and more like a neighborhood. on nut is even more local with a big market and cheap eats, plus the bts is right there. not as polished as thonglor but way more real

honestly just check out Thonglor. yeah its still kinda on the Sukhumvit line but way different vibe, more classy with actual locals and couples hanging out. tons of good restaurants and chill bars tucked in the sois, plus its not all go-go bars and drunk dudes. easy BTS access too

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
