I'm looking into moving to Bangkok for a year but I'm struggling to find apartments.

My plan is to live near Sukhumvit ... near the BTS ideally.

The problem is that all the Apartments tend to be cookie cutter and I'm trying to find one with an open floor plan.

I work from home, and it's just me, but if I pay more rent money I notice that I just get places with more rooms.

What I want to do is pay like 80k-120k baht but have a large floor layout and ideally high ceilings.

Do I have to live in another part of the city maybe?

Or maybe part of the problem is that the rental market doesn't have nice places like this?

I work from home so the open floor layout is important.

You should check out the older condos along Sukhumvit between Asok and Thong Lo, especially the ones built in the late 90s or early 2000s. Buildings like the Lakewood or Baan Suan Thong Lo have much larger floor plates and higher ceilings than anything built in the last decade. The trade-off is older finishes and no fancy co-working lobby, but for 80k-120k baht you'd get a proper 60-70 square meter one-bedroom with actual separation between living and sleeping areas.

If you want truly open plan with high ceilings, look at converted shophouses in the Ekkamai or Ari areas. They're not in standard condo towers and you'd go through a local agency like Hipflat or DDproperty's direct listings. A friend rents a 100sqm loft space near Ari BTS for around 90k baht, exposed concrete ceiling at maybe 4 meters, and that kind of layout just doesn't exist in the newer high-rises.

yeah honestly for that budget you could look at some of the older loft-style buildings near Phra Khanong or On Nut. the newer condos are all about squeezing in as many units as possible but places like the Tree or some of the converted warehouse spaces on Sukhumvit 50 have way more open layouts and taller ceilings. just search for "loft" or "duplex" on ddproperty or hipflat, theres some gems hidden in the side sois that dont show up on the main rental sites

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
