Hi,

I'm in BK and have a remote test that apparently needs windows, I only brought a mac with me. I'm looking for the most basic used computer I can get (as cheap as possible but still working). Is there a place where they sell used laptops? I've been on FB marketplace but I don't speak Thai and I'd like to check in person that it actually works, so I'd prefer a shop. Again as cheap as possible but working, I just need to access a browser.

Something like Akihabara in Tokyo would be ideal. I know that doesn't exist but just as a comparison.

(The program blocks VMs and I don't want to deal with bootcamp)

another spot to check is Zeer Rangsit if you're willing to go a bit north. it's a massive IT mall with a whole section of used laptops on the third floor, mostly older business models that came from corporate lease returns. prices start around 2,000 baht for something that can barely browse but might get u through a test, though you'll want to spend closer to 3,000 for something reliable

the vibe there is less touristy than MBK so sellers are used to dealing with people who know what they want. just point at the laptop you're interested in and they'll let u plug it in. one thing to watch for is the battery life on these things is usually shot, so plan on keeping it plugged in during your test

if you're near the BTS line, check out the small shop on the ground floor of IT Square Lak Si. it's a bit of a trek but they have a stack of old ThinkPads for 2,500-3,500 baht, mostly T-series models that are built like tanks. the guy who runs it speaks enough english to tell you if it boots and what's wrong with it

just bring a flash drive with a browser installer on it to test, cause some of these have wiped drives or weird partitions. also worth asking if they have a charger that fits, they usually keep a bucket of them under the counter but not always the right one

honestly for a throwaway windows laptop your best bet is Fortune Town near Rama 9. it's not as organized as Akihabara but the IT mall there has a whole floor of used laptops, prices are negotiable and you can test them on the spot. I've seen basic machines around 3-4k baht that can run a browser fine.

another option is Pantip Plaza near Saphan Khwai but it's a bit dead these days compared to Fortune. still some shops in the basement area that deal with old office laptops, think Dell Latitudes and Lenovo ThinkPads that businesses dumped. just make sure to ask for a charger cause sometimes they forget to include one.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
