Hello,

I've had my 3rd massage now and all they do is push push push.

Am I asking for the wrong massage? Can someone recommend a place to get the painful one? Lol

Thanks!!!

i think the issue is the oil. traditional thai massage is dry, no oil, on a floor mat. the oil ones are more of a spa thing. look for "nuad boran" or just say "no oil" when you book.

for the real painful one, try Lek Massage near the BTS onnut, it's a bit rough and ready but the ladies there know their stuff. or Ban Tamnanthai in the old city, they're known for being pretty intense. just tell them "mai bao" which means don't be gentle, and they'll get the hint. honestly it's a whole different experience once they start walking on your back.

You're getting the oils-and-pressure version, which is the tourist standard. What you're after is called nuad thai, the traditional dry style, done on a mat in loose clothes. Ask for "nuad thai" specifically, not "Thai massage," and tell them you want it strong, because a lot of places will default to gentle if you don't.

For the real deal, try Wat Pho's massage school near the Grand Palace. It's a bit touristy but the therapists there are trained properly and won't hold back if you ask. Or head to Ruen Nuad, a small converted house off Sukhumvit Soi 42, quieter and very legit. Expect some grunts and cracking, and don't be shy about saying "more" if it's not enough, they usually tune it up fast.

You've been getting the oil massage, which is the spa version. The one you want is nuad thai, the dry one on the floor in pajamas. It's a different lineage, more like assisted yoga with pressure points, and the cracking comes from the therapist using their whole body weight on you.

Go to Prakanong, there's a place called Siam Relax on Sukhumvit 71 that's been around for ages. It's nothing fancy, just a shophouse, but the older therapists there will fold you like laundry if you ask for "strong." Tell them "nak nak" when they ask about pressure, that's the local way to say really hard. Expect it to feel like a workout, you'll be sore the next day but in a good way.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
