I guess I was expecting something like a roundtable-like setup where people become part of a group wherever they sit. Are there any dispensaries that promote a more social experience like what I expected?

i get what u mean, most spots are just fancy living rooms where nobody makes eye contact. try Canna Cafe on Soi Nana (the original one, not the tourist street) - they have this long shared bar counter with stools and people actually talk across it. the owner plays old thai records and will just hand u a lighter and say "share this with the guy next to u". it's not forced but the setup kinda nudges u into talking. also check out their weekend morning sessions around 10am, way more chill and the regulars are friendly

honestly the social dispensary thing is hit or miss here. most places just want u to buy and leave. i'd check out The Green House on Ekkamai, they have a weird setup where theres like a big horseshoe bar and people actually talk to each other while rolling up. the owner works the counter and he'll literally hand u a joint and introduce u to whoever's sitting next to u

another spot is High Society near Ari BTS, they do these free rolling workshops on saturday afternoons where everyone's learning together and passing stuff around. it's more about the activity than just sitting there. staff will sit down with u and chat for a bit if its not too busy

Yeah the dispensary scene here is mostly just smoke spots where people stick to their own groups. If you want actual socializing, check out Cloud Nine on Sukhumvit Soi 11. They have a big communal table setup and the staff actually introduces people to each other. Fridays around 6pm is when the regulars show up and it gets chatty.

Another option is Fat Buds near Thong Lo BTS. They do these little group sessions where they'll roll something up and pass it around while explaining the strain. It's not a roundtable vibe exactly but way more social than the typical lounge where everyone's glued to their phone.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
