yeah the bar scene here is hit or miss if u want substance. have u thought about the expat meetup groups that do hiking or cycling? like the bangkok bike riders meet at lumpini park sunday mornings, all ages, super friendly, no agenda. or check out the book exchange at dasa books on sukhumvit, it's tiny but people hang around and talk about what they're reading, very low pressure. also the art openings at river city or the jam factory on saturdays, free wine and people actually discuss the work not each other's waistlines lol. i've made more real connections at a fullmoon party honestly but if u want decent, those are my go-tos.

Try a cooking class or a pottery workshop. Places like Bangkok Culinary Studio or Tonson Gallery do small group sessions, and you're forced to actually talk to the person next to you while you're both messing up a pad thai or a clay bowl. It's a completely different crowd, mostly locals and long-term expats who want a hobby, not a hookup. I've met some genuinely interesting people that way, and the conversation flows naturally because you're doing something with your hands, not staring at each other over a drink. Also, the Saturday morning farmers market at Chatuchak, the organic section, is a good spot to strike up a chat about produce or coffee, way less pressure than a bar.

The volunteering circuit is a solid move if you want to meet people with a bit of substance. Places like the Bangkok Community Theatre or the animal rescue groups, say Soi Dog Foundation's city events, draw a regular crowd of locals and expats who show up week after week. You get to know the same faces over time, which is way more natural than a one-off bar chat. Also, the Sunday night open mic at Jam House on Sukhumvit 31 pulls a mixed bunch, poets, musicians, folks just listening, and the conversation there tends to be about the performance, not pickup lines.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
