I was thinking either getting on a river boat or a rooftop bar. I know I probably have to book soon so if you have any recommendations I would love to hear them. Would prefer a place with a nice view of the fireworks. And also how is it getting around in BKK during new years?

If you want something a bit different from the typical rooftop scene, the river cruise option is genuinely fun. You book a dinner cruise with a company like Chao Phraya Princess or Loy Nava and you get a floating view of the fireworks going off at IconSiam, Wat Arun, and along both banks. The food is average but the experience of gliding past lit-up temples and hearing cheers from other boats makes up for it.

For getting around, your best bet is to stay within walking distance of your celebration spot. The BTS and MRT run late but they are absolutely slammed, especially at Siam and Asok. If you are on a river cruise, the boat docks right back where it started so you just walk back to your hotel or a nearby bar to wait out the crowd.

I'd actually skip the super famous rooftop bars and look at something like The Speakeasy at Hotel Muse instead. It's not right on the river but you get a solid view of the city fireworks spread across multiple spots, and the crowd tends to be a bit more chill than the Instagram-heavy places.

For getting around, stay within walking distance of wherever you end up. The BTS and MRT run until about 2am on NYE but Sukhumvit Road turns into a parking lot by 8pm. If you're near a pier, the Chao Phraya express boats stop around midnight so that river cruise might be your best bet for both views and transport combined.

Rooftop bars book up fast, like weeks in advance for the popular ones. If you want a view of the main fireworks over the river, try Tichuca or Mahanakhon SkyBar, but expect to pay a premium and deal with crowds. The river boat option is more unique and you can see multiple firework spots along the Chao Phraya, though you're stuck on the water for the whole evening.

Getting around is a nightmare, honestly. Traffic gridlocks by early evening and taxis become scarce or refuse meters. The BTS and MRT run later than usual on New Year's Eve but get packed. If you're staying near your celebration spot, walking might be your best bet.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
