Why do people call Bangkok BKK?

The general rule of nicknames is that they are shorter than formal names. So they save time. But in the odd case of Bangkok - BKK, Bang-kok is only two syllables, whereas B-K-K is longer at three syll… The general rule of nicknames is that they are shorter than formal names. Further, I cannot think of any other city in the world that is known for it's airport code? Since an airport is not really a crucial part of the city, but just a way of arriving/leaving the said city.

Any thoughts on this?

lax and jfk are both three syllables too but people use them all the time. bkk is just the iata code that got adopted for everything because suvarnabhumi is impossible to spell and don muang is even worse. plus in thai text slang people write krungthep or bkk interchangeably, it's just faster than switching keyboards to type in thai script

you're overthinking it tbh. bkk is just the iata code and it's way faster to type in texts or when booking flights. nobody actually says "bee-kay-kay" out loud in conversation, it's purely digital shorthand. same way people use LAX or JFK even tho those are 3 syllables too. airport codes just became the default for cities with multiple airports or confusing names.

honestly it's prob just bc airports are such a big deal for tourists in bangkok. suvarnabhumi is a mouthful so BKK sticks easier than saying bangkok for everything

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
