That didn't work and I was told to through an immigration officer. This made me wonder: who can use the automated emigration gates at BKK airport? E.g., does that depend on the nationality or the flight? Assume that the passenger is in good standing, e.g. didn't overstay.

tbh if you're on a visa exempt or tourist visa those eGates won't let you through, they're mainly for Thai passports and residents with re-entry permits. even some foreigners with work permits get rejected if their visa type isn't linked to the system. next time just queue for the officer, the line usually moves faster than you'd think anyway

the egates at bkk are basically just for thai nationals and foreigners with a specific kind of permanent residency or re-entry permit linked to their passport chip. even if you have a valid visa or work permit, the system won't read your chip the same way. your best bet is to stick with the manned booths, and if you're flying out of the satellite concourse, the immigration lines there are sometimes shorter than the main terminal ones

Yeah only Thai nationals and some foreign residents with the long-term visa types can use them, they check your passport chip so non-Thai passports without that status wont work no matter the flight

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
