Off work and headed to the beach Oct. 4-11. Least chance of rain?

I'm thinking Hua Hin.

Any recommendations on a place to take my wife would be great. Willing to pay for somewhere nice.

If you're set on that week, check the actual resort's cancellation policy before you book, because Oct 4-11 can swing either way. Some years it's beautiful, some years you get a solid week of grey. Places like the Hyatt Regency or Anantara let you cancel up to 24-48 hours out, which buys you flexibility if the forecast turns.

One thing worth knowing, the king's birthday and Chulalongkorn Day stuff isn't until later in the month so you're clear of Thai holiday crowds. Rates that week are usually 30-40% below what you'd pay from November, so you can get a much nicer room for the same money. Just don't expect the sea to be glassy, the Gulf gets choppy and the jellyfish show up more in Oct.

If it does rain, the Vana Nava water park and the night market on Soi 72 are decent fallbacks. But honestly for a trip with your wife I'd book the nicest place you can at the lower rate and just roll with whatever weather you get.

Hua Hin works but I'd actually point you slightly south to Pranburi if you want quiet and a nicer room for the money. Places like Aleenta or the Sheraton Pranburi sit on a long empty stretch of beach about 30 minutes from Hua Hin town, and you trade the bar scene for actual peace, which sounds right for a trip with your wife. One thing nobody mentions: October 4 to 11 often overlaps with the vegetarian festival in Phuket and Trang, but that's a southern Gulf thing, so it won't touch your plans. Book your room now though, that week is right before high season rates kick in and the good beachfront places fill fast.

Early October is still tail end of the southwest monsoon, so the Gulf side (Hua Hin, Cha Am) is genuinely your better bet than Phuket or Samui, which usually get hit harder into November. Hua Hin itself sits in a bit of a rain shadow from the Burmese mountains, so you'll likely get short afternoon showers rather than all-day soakings. If you want somewhere nice, look at the InterContinental or Vana Nava area rather than the budget guesthouses around Soi Bintabaht, and consider a day trip to Khao Sam Roi Yot, the cave there (Phraya Nakhon) is worth the drive.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
