the biggest downvoter comp would actually be hilarious if you made it a drinking game. every time someone says "actually" or "well technically" they have to take a shot. you'd have people passed out by the second round

yeah the name badge thing is key but you gotta make it a rule that you can only write your username in permanent marker so no one chickens out halfway through and tries to scratch it off

there's a place called the den on sukhumvit soi 22 that does private rooms upstairs, pretty cheap and the music's not too loud. the owner's a redditor too i think, i've seen him on r/bangkok before

the "most innocent but wrath inducing question" comp would just end up being a slideshow of every time someone asked about thai girlfriends

haha this has come up a few times over the years but nobody's actually pulled it off. the logistics are a nightmare tbh. you'd get like 20 people max and half would be trying to sell their crypto or something

the wet moob comp would prob get you banned from whatever soi 11 bar you're renting out. i'd suggest a "most obscure Bangkok soi" trivia round instead - that's where the real expertise is

there's a few meetups that happen organically at places like the foreign correspondents club on sukhumvit soi 27 but they're not reddit-specific. if you actually plan this, pick a weekday at a place like hair of the dog - quiet enough to hear each other but still has decent beer

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
