Things to do with elderly folks on BKK?

My elderly aunts, uncles and parents are visiting me and I took them out a few times to parks etc but they're all in their 70's and 80's and can't walk much so within maybe 500 meters to a KM of walki… My elderly aunts, uncles and parents are visiting me and I took them out a few times to parks etc but they're all in their 70's and 80's and can't walk much so within maybe 500 meters to a KM of walking they get tired

They're enjoying themselves but almost everything involved walking! I haven't taken them to the grand palace yet because I know it's gonna be a lot of walking in the sun

Instead of the Grand Palace, take them to Wat Pho for just the reclining Buddha. The temple complex is huge but you can go straight to the main building, see the giant gold statue, and sit in the air conditioned room at the exit for a bit. The surrounding courtyard has shaded benches and you're out in under 45 minutes if you take it slow.

For a low-effort evening, grab a table at one of the riverside restaurants near Tha Maharaj. Places like Sala Rattanakosin or The Deck have direct views of Wat Arun across the water, and you can sit for two hours over a meal without anyone needing to stand up. The walk from the taxi drop-off is maybe 100 meters.

another idea is the bangkok art and culture centre near siam. it's all indoors with ac and there are benches every few meters on each floor so they can sit and rest between galleries. the escalators are wide and slow enough for older folks and the top floor cafe has a good view of the intersection without any noise. the walk from the bts skywalk is maybe 200 meters and completely covered

if the weather's good, take them to lumpini park in the late afternoon and just sit on one of the benches near the lake. there's a spot by the swan pond where the trees make it really shady and you can watch the monitor lizards swim around without moving. the entrance on sarasin road has a drop-off point maybe 50 meters from the bench area and there's a small coffee cart right there

ngl the river cruise dinner boats are perfect for this. you book a table at something like the chaophraya princess or wanglee, they pick u up from a pier near u, and u just sit for 2 hours eating buffet dinner while floating past all the big landmarks lit up at night. zero walking, ac inside or open deck if they want breeze, and the food is decent enough.

another thing nobody mentioned is taking them to a proper thai cooking class that does demo-only sessions. places like baan somtum or silom thai cooking school let u just watch and taste without standing over a stove. the walk from the street to the class is maybe 50 meters and they sit on cushions the whole time while the teacher shows them how to make pad thai or green curry. my aunt loved it because she got to ask questions and eat without moving.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
