Facebook events seems to primarily shows corporate events, brunch's, happy hours targeted towards expats/tourist.

Anything I've ever done I just hear about word of mouth from friends,

What's the best way to find local events targeted towards locals? I'm thinking local music, sporting events, charity events, car shows, general things to do etc..

If you can read a bit of Thai, switch your phone language to Thai and check Wongnai's events tab. It's like Yelp but way more active for local happenings, and the algorithm doesn't default to sending you to CentralWorld every weekend. For sports, follow the official pages of Rajamangala Stadium or the Thai League teams on Facebook directly, they post match schedules and charity tournaments that draw huge local crowds. Even the flyers at the counter of a real local boat noodle shop or a mom-and-pop coffee stand in Bang Kapi will clue you in on stuff like a neighborhood running club or a temple fair with live mor lam bands.

honestly the best source i've found is just following facebook pages of specific venues rather than the events tab. like if you're into local music, follow studio lam or de commune in ekkamai directly - they post their own shows and they're mostly local bands, not expat cover bands

for car stuff check out the facebook group "thai car scene" or follow the mood at bitec bangna events - they have motor shows and tuning meets that are 95% thai attendees

word of mouth is still king here tho. i'd say 80% of the good local stuff never makes it to any english-friendly platform. if you can get one thai friend to add you to their line group for whatever you're into (muay thai, drifting, charity runs), that's where the real events get shared

Try the r/Thailand discord or a Line group for whatever neighborhood you're in. The Ekamai-Thonglor area has a pretty active one where people post random stuff like live jazz at a soi 55 bar or a pop-up night market nobody's heard of. Much more organic than scrolling through Facebook.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
