No helmets for grab bike?

So I had an appointment at samitivej this morning and figured I'd take a bike because I know the traffic gets so bad in the AM. I've only taken grab bikes in Vietnam where they always have ano… So I had an appointment at samitivej this morning and figured I'd take a bike because I know the traffic gets so bad in the AM. I've only taken grab bikes in Vietnam where they always have another helmet for the rider. Well , this guy did not. We start going and he's weaving through traffic and gets up to 75 on Sukhumvit while it's still a bit wet. The only thought going through my mind is at least we're headed to a hospital if anything happens.

fwiw I've had grab drivers pull out a helmet that looked like it survived a crash from 1998, so even when they have one it's not exactly reassuring. if you're going to samitivej regularly, there's a helmet shop on sukhumvit 63 between soi 1 and 3 that sells decent ones for like 300 baht, just leave it in your office or locker there. also 75 on wet sukhumvit is terrifying but tbh most of these guys are doing that speed regardless of weather, the rain just makes it feel worse

honestly grab bike drivers here are a mixed bag, some carry a spare helmet but most don't bother. if you're heading to samitivej again, the motorbike taxis at ekkamai bts are way more reliable about helmets and they know that hospital run well. also 75 on wet sukhmvit is wild, those guys are insane with the speed sometimes. i'd just bring your own helmet or take the bts next time, the walk from ekkamai to samitivej is like 5 minutes anyway

Yeah, that's pretty common here unfortunately. Most Grab bike drivers only have the one helmet for themselves, and they'll just assume you're fine without one or that you'd bring your own. I've started keeping a cheap helmet in my bag when I know I'll be taking a bike, or I just stick to using the BTS to Samitivej since it's right next to Ekkamai station anyway. The ride from there is maybe 50 baht on a motorbike taxi and they're usually a bit more careful than Grab drivers.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
