Are there any suicide prevention services for the foreigners in Bangkok?

arrow_drop_up 13 arrow_drop_down

if you're near Thonglor, the Samitivej Sukhumvit hospital has a specific mental health hotline that's separate from the main switchboard, number is 02-022-2222 and you can ask for the crisis team directly. they'll triage over the phone and can arrange a car to pick you up if you're stuck somewhere. also worth knowing that most 7-Elevens sell basic sedatives like diphenhydramine over the counter, but don't rely on that as a long term fix. the key thing with any hospital here is to use the word "psychiatric emergency" at the front desk, it gets you bumped up the queue way faster than saying you need a counselor

the samitivej option is solid, but also check out the Bangkok Christian Hospital on Silom near Surasak BTS. they've got a mental health dept that sees foreigners regularly, walk-in friendly and way cheaper than the private joints. their international clinic staff speaks english fine, just tell the front desk you need a counselor urgently. also the Thai suicide hotline 02-713-6793 has some english operators, but you'll prob have to wait a bit longer. if things feel really bad, just go straight to the ER at Bumrungrad, they're used to handling this stuff with farangs

one option people skip is reaching out to your embassy directly before anything else. the british embassy on wireless road has a consular team that keeps a list of english-speaking psychiatrists they can text you within minutes, no appointment needed. the australian embassy on sathorn road has a similar setup and their duty officer once helped a friend get admitted to bnh hospital on soi 11 same night. embassies are way more useful for this than most people realize, they deal with mental health crises pretty regularly

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
