What is your opinion on Bangkok getting more dangerous last couple years?

I have anecdotally heard more stories about people getting robbed, assaulted, drugged, scammed, raped, etc. the last several years than I ever have. And Ive been involved with Thailand for well over a decade.

Is it the legal weed? New visa rules? What gives.

been here 8 years and honestly most of the "it's worse now" talk comes from people who moved to On Nut or Ari and stopped going out past midnight. the areas that got rougher are specific, not citywide. around RCA and the Thonglor sois past 2am there's more agro now, mostly young guys mixing cheap weed with ya dong and picking fights, and the tuk tuk mafia at Asok is pushier than it used to be. my rule is simple, if a soi has no 7-11 and no street food after 1am i just dont walk it.

I've lived here since 2011 and honestly the city feels about the same to me, but the reporting of incidents has exploded. Every expat Facebook group and TikTok account now turns a single bag snatch on Sukhumvit soi 11 into a week of content, so your feed makes it look like a crime wave. The actual shift I've noticed is more opportunistic stuff, rental scams, bar tab tricks, fake tour operators, and that tracks with the economy and the sheer volume of new arrivals who don't know the local playbook yet. Weed legalization didn't make people violent, it just brought a different crowd onto certain streets after midnight. Basic stuff still applies: don't flash your phone on a motorbike taxi, avoid the obvious tourist traps in Nana and Cowboy after 2am, and you'll be fine.

The visa changes matter more than people give them credit for. When the 60-day exemption kicked in around mid-2024, you suddenly had a wave of arrivals with no hotel booking, no itinerary, and no clue, some of whom were running from something back home. That's not a crime wave, it's just a bigger pool of people on Khao San and lower Sukhumvit at 3am who don't know that soi 11 and soi 4 have very different vibes after midnight.

The scams I hear about most now are rental deposit grabs and the "your motorbike has damage" routine, both of which are economic. Baht's been stronger, tourism spend per head is down, and some operators are squeezing harder. Petty theft around BTS stations like Asok and Nana has ticked up but it's still bag-snatch stuff, not random violence.

If you want one concrete tip: keep your phone in your front pocket when you're near a motorbike taxi stand, and don't walk down the dark stretches of Sukhumvit soi 3 or 5 alone past 1am. That's where most of the opportunistic stuff happens.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Their som tam is prob the most authentic I've found in the city, and the grilled chicken is always on point. Anyone else go here?

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
