Been reading that end of 2024, the government will be changing the laws for purchasing recreational MJ in thailand. IS this true? I'm planning to witness my first SONG KRAN in 2025 and i wanna experience it full force.... lol Thoughts?

weed shops near khao san actually get raided harder during songkran week bc of all the tourist attention, so buying there is risky. if u want to be safe grab from a shop around phrom phong or thong lor a few days before, less heat on those spots. also note the police checkpoints on rama iv and silom go up during the festival so dont carry more than a small amount on u while u are out getting soaked

The law changes people keep talking about are mostly about reclassifying cannabis back to a narcotic, which would kill the walk-in dispensaries but probably leave medical channels open. Nothing's been gazetted yet so the thousands of shops on Sukhumvit and around Nana are still trading normally. For Songkran specifically, the bigger logistical headache is that many dispensaries shut for the holiday or run short hours, so if you're arriving right before April 13 you'll want to sort your stash a day or two early rather than on the day itself. Also worth knowing the BTS and MRT run packed to the doors during Songkran and you can't bring open drinks on, so plan your movement around that.

one thing nobody's flagged, the reclassification talk got punted to a committee review back in july and thailand moves slow on this stuff, so april 2025 will prob still look like now, walk in and buy. what actually changes for songkran is the booze rules, no alcohol sales 2pm to 5pm and again after midnight at 7-eleven and most shops, so plan your drinking around that window. also silom soi 4 and khao san get shut to traffic and turn into one big wet zone, but the sois off sukhumvit like soi 11 stay open and are way less insane if u want to actually breathe.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
