I didn't like Masu Maki. Any sushi recommendations?

You might have better luck at Sushi Ichikawa in Ekkamai. It's a small eight-seat counter run by a chef who used to work at some high-end places in Ginza. The shari is on the vinegar-heavy side which I prefer, and their chutoro is always well-marbled without being mushy. Lunch sets start around 800 baht and dinner omakase runs closer to 3000, but the quality justifies it.

sushi tanabe in thonglor is my go to when i want something solid without the fuss. the chef there trained in japan for like 15 years before opening this place. their anago is the best i've had in bangkok and its only like 80 baht per piece. you can sit at the counter and watch them work, feels more authentic than the trendy spots

ngl the best sushi i've had in bangkok is at sushi yokoi in the ekkamai area. it's a tiny place hidden on soi ekkamai 10, the owner is this older japanese guy who makes everything himself. i always go for the omakase at dinner, it's around 2000 baht and you get like 15 pieces including some real seasonal stuff like shirako or kohada that you don't see everywhere. the rice is warm and loose, exactly how it should be

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
