This morning I see a pall of smoke south of the Bangnatrad highway. I cannot find any news online but there was certainly a large response last night. Can anyone enlighten me as to what was on fire?

The smoke you saw was from a fire at a scrap metal and plastic sorting yard behind the old Imperial World complex on Srinakarin. I drove past around midnight and the police had the entire soi blocked off, with emergency crews running hoses from a nearby canal because the hydrants couldn't keep up. If you're looking for updates, the Samut Prakan disaster prevention page on Facebook usually posts incident reports by late morning, which is more reliable than mainstream news for these local fires.

Yeah that was a plastics recycling plant that caught fire, off Srinakarin Soi 44. I live nearby and the smoke was pretty thick until around 3am when they got it under control. The smell was terrible too, like burning rubber and chemicals mixed together. You can still see some haze this morning because the wind is light but it should clear up by afternoon.

I saw the same smoke column this morning from my place near the Bearing BTS. There was a big chemical warehouse fire off Srinakarin Road, near the old Imperial World shopping center. It started around 11pm and they had over 20 fire trucks out there. The smoke was drifting because of the wind direction, making it look worse than it probably was from the Bangna side.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
