Where to go when it's pouring?

Besides going back home, where do you go when it's pouring? Besides going back home, where do you go when it's pouring?

ngl the sky bars are underrated in a storm. yeah you get wet but the lightning over the city is insane, plus everyone else bails so you basically have the place to yourself. octave rooftop is easy to get to and they'll let u sit under the awning part, just order a singha and watch the chaos. waterproof jacket mandatory tho.

or if u wanna stay dry, hit a snooker club. the ones near phrom phong are proper old school, dark, aircon blasting, and nobody cares if u camp out for two hours. cheap beers too, like 60 baht. way better than a mall if u ask me.

honestly, if it's a proper monsoon dump, i head to a mall with a cinema that does the late show thing. Paragon's basement is a maze, you can kill hours there without stepping outside. grab a roti at the food court after, it's cheap and hits the spot.

or, if you're closer to the old town, the river ferry is actually kind of cool in the rain. you get soaked but it's over in five minutes and you end up at a wat with no one around. plus the wet smell of the river is something else, real Bangkok vibe.

one spot that never gets enough credit is the old siam movie theater on the ground floor of the siam square complex. it's not the fancy cineplex, it's the tiny one tucked behind the arcade. they play random indie and old thai films, tickets are like 80 baht, and the seats are those ancient red velvet things. you can sit through two showings if you're sneaky and the rain's still coming down. grab a papaya salad from the vendor outside the exit after, it's a proper storm ritual.

or if you're feeling adventurous, the khlong boats still run in the rain. hop on at saen saep and ride the whole line, it's like 15 baht and you see the city from the back alleys. you'll get a bit sprayed but the covered sections keep you dry enough. the smell of wet wood and diesel is weirdly calming.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
