How easy is it to make friends with local people?

Based on my hobbies, I love doing photography and filmmaking. I would love to be friends with people who are in the same field. Based on my hobbies, I love doing photography and filmmaking. I would love to be friends with people who are in the same field.

The photography crowd here is genuinely easy to tap into if you show up with a camera in hand. I'd skip the big Facebook groups and just wander Talat Noi or the Charoen Krung back alleys on a Saturday morning, you'll run into people shooting the same faded shopfronts and street murals. A nod and a glance at someone's screen is enough to start a conversation, everyone's comparing light and composition anyway.

For filmmaking, the real in is through the short film nights at Doc Club or the occasional open screening at the Bangkok Screening Room on Soi Srimongkol. People there are hungry to talk about lenses and locations, and they're usually planning something low budget you could hop onto. Don't worry about Thai being perfect, most of the younger crew speak enough English, but tossing in "ngan di" when someone shows you their work goes a long way.

One thing I've noticed is that locals in creative fields are way more direct than the general crowd, they'll tell you if your framing is off or your story drags. That honesty is a shortcut to friendship if you can take it, and it means they'll actually invite you to their next shoot rather than just being polite. Bring a pack of cold cha yen when you meet up, it's the universal peace offering here.

honestly it's not hard if u put yourself out there. the photography scene here is pretty active, lots of small group walks around old town or along the river at golden hour. check out the Bangkok Photographers Club on facebook, they do meetups in places like Talat Noi or around the khlongs, people are super welcoming even if ur thai is shaky.

for filmmaking it's a bit more niche but the indie crowd hangs around places like the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre or the occasional screening at House RCA. just strike up convo after a show, most folks are happy to talk gear or locations. thai people are chill but a bit reserved at first, so buying someone a coffee or street food usually breaks the ice fast.

one thing that helps is learning a few phrases like "pai thiao" for hanging out, it shows u're not just a tourist. and don't overthink it, the expat-and-local mix in the creative circles is way more blended than u'd expect.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
