Car tax and insurance at the drive thru for a car older than 5 years? Help!

(Will be getting more comprehensive insurance sorted later!) I know I can go to Department of Land Transportation (Area 3), Sukhumvit to get it done.

But what I need to know is can I get the conpulsary insurance in the drive thru inspection section with the tax or will they ask to see insurance docs after I have queued in the car and then send me into the dlt office to get it separately first and then have to rejoin the queue?

Don't want to waste time at either and find I should have gone to the other one first!

Many thanks

I've done this at Area 3 a few times with older cars. The insurance counters inside the building are on the ground floor near the main entrance, you don't need to go upstairs. Buy the compulsory policy there, walk back out to your car, and get in the drive thru line. The inspection guys will check your insurance slip along with the other papers before they send you to the tax window. The whole thing including the insurance stop is usually under 30 minutes if you go on a weekday morning before 10am.

the drive thru at sukumvit is pretty efficient once you have all your papers. you can actually buy the compulsory insurance right there at the same building, they have a few insurance counters inside before you get to the inspection line. just park, go in, grab the insurance from one of those booths, then hop back in the car and queue for the drive thru. takes maybe 10 minutes extra and saves you a whole second trip

You'll need the insurance first before they'll process the tax stamp so get that done inside the office before you queue up for the drive thru.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
