Homeless shelters for women?
She was sleeping in a temple for a couple of nights but she got scared by a sket… A Thai friend of mine has got into a bad situation and is currently homeless in Bangkok. I'm really worried about her.
She was sleeping in a temple for a couple of nights but she got scared by a sketchy bloke and fled. Now, she's just wandering about with nowhere to go.
Does anyone know any homeless shelters for women or a temple that only houses women so she can have somewhere safe to sleep for a while until she figures things out? I've tried googling but I can't speak Thai so I can't really navigate sites very well.
Some links to sites and locations would be helpful so I can pass them onto her. Thanks.
the mirror foundation in bangkok works with homeless women, they have a shelter out near min buri. your friend can call them at 02-908-7489, they usually have thai speakers who can help. another option is the bangkok women's shelter run by the social development department, it's near chatuchak park and they take walk-ins. tell her to just show up and say she needs a place, they won't turn her away.
honestly I'd tell her to try the Baan Phra Khru Noi shelter, it's run by some nuns over near Wat Saket, they take in women and it's pretty safe. also the Bangkok Remand Home for Women might be an option even if it sounds official, they sometimes help with temp housing if you explain the situation. tell her to find a 7-Eleven with a phone and call the Bangkok hotline at 1300, it's the city social service line and they can direct her in Thai real quick
I think the Bangkok Christian Guesthouse in Silom sometimes helps women in tough spots, not sure if they do shelter though. You could also try reaching out to the SOS Foundation, they're a local group that might have more specific links.
best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026
Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.
for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.
honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
