Is it possible to date locals and not people that are doing it for a living or trying to scam people?

Work in IT and taking a career break for 12 months to travel and see the world. Never been to SE Asia and going to spend a lot of time in Thailand I think, always loved it in movies etc and the food.

Really excited and would love to date locals but hear a lot of horror stories about people being drugged, scammed etc.

Are there specific apps that locals use outside of Tinder etc to meet?

ngl the best move is to stop treating this like a dating project and just become a regular somewhere. thai women who are worth your time will clock you as the foreigner who shows up at the same noodle shop or the same park bench for a month, not the guy who's swiping between meetings.

the horror stories you hear are almost always from dudes who skip straight to late night venues. if a woman suggests a "quiet place" after 10pm on the first meet, that's not a date, that's a transaction waiting to happen. real thai dating for people our age is lunch at a food court in siam paragon or a walk around lumpini park, then she's home by 9 because she has to work.

one practical tip nobody's given yet: use the thai version of google maps reviews to find spots where locals actually hang, not expat haunts. filter for places with only thai language reviews, that's your signal. a small cafe in a soi off sukhumvit 71 or a japanese curry shop in ekkamai with zero english reviews will have a completely different crowd than any place listed on a falang blog.

also, don't overthink the scam stuff. if you're not flashing cash, not following anyone to a second location, and not drinking with strangers who approach you first, you're 95% safe. the other 5% is just learning to say no and walk

yeah totally doable but honestly the apps here are mostly a numbers game of who you swipe past. thai women on hinge or bumble tend to be more career focused, but even then you'll get matches that go straight to line and ask if you want a "massage" or something. just unmatch and move on.

better angle is to join a hobby scene that forces interaction, like bouldering at rock climbing gyms in ekamai or a muay thai gym where you train daily. people get to know you as the irish guy who actually shows up, not a tourist. also try the expat-run language exchanges at places like the reading room on sukhumvit 31, but go for the thai side of the table, not the falang side.

one thing nobody mentions: thai women in their 30s who are single and educated often get pressure from family, so they're not looking for a fling. they'll ask about your job and why you're really here. if you're honest about the divorce and the career break, that actually reads as stable and mature, not sketchy. just don't lead with "i'm rich and free" because that screams scam target.

and for the love of god, learn to read the room on line. if she's replying fast and sends voice notes, that's real interest. if it's one-word answers and she asks to meet at a "quiet bar"

The drug and scam stories are real but they cluster around specific behaviors, mainly drinking with strangers in nightlife zones. Normal dating here is daytime, food-focused, and surprisingly conservative, so shift your frame to that and you'll be fine.

One thing the others haven't mentioned: the language barrier cuts both ways. Plenty of educated Thai women in their 30s speak decent English but are tired of being treated as a walking translation app or a tour guide. If you show basic effort with Thai and actually listen when they talk about their work or family, you're already ahead of the pack.

For meeting people, try joining a volunteer group or a cooking class where you're there to do something, not to pick up. Places like the Bangkok Foodies group on Meetup or the community classes at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre attract curious, open-minded locals. The dynamic is completely different from a bar, you're all learning something together and that builds natural rapport.

Also, be upfront about your timeline early on. A woman who's career-focused and family-oriented will appreciate knowing you're here for a year, not a week. That honesty filters out the transactional crowd and the ones looking for a quick visa, leaving you with people who actually want to know you.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
