Midsummer celebration in Bangkok?

Hi I am from Sweden and I am going to Bangkok on Friday to hang out with my Australian girlfriend and family. Is there any Midsummer celebration in Bangok? Its my most valued holiday. Another option if you want the full Swedish experience is to check if any of the big hotels are hosting anything. The Radisson Blu on Sukhumvit has done Scandinavian-themed brunches around this time before, and they're usually more relaxed than the Society thing, though you'll pay hotel prices for it. Worth a quick call to their restaurant desk when you land.

Also, don't count out just making your own small gathering. Grab some flowers from the weekend market near Chatuchak or even the stalls outside EmQuartier, pick up a cheap white tablecloth from a local shop, and set up a picnic in Benjakitti Park by the lake. It won't be the same as home, but with the right people and some snaps, the feeling can come close. The heat is the real enemy there, so aim for late afternoon when it starts cooling down.

yeah the Scandinavian Society thing is the main one but honestly if you're here on the actual friday, check the Swedish Church in Bangkok too. they sometimes do a smaller service and picnic thing out near Bang Na, more chill if you want the quiet version. the Society's clubhouse is fun but it gets packed with expats who've been here forever, so it can feel less like home and more like a networking event.

also worth knowing that 7-Eleven here sells frozen herring if you get desperate, but the pickled stuff is hard to find outside of the big supermarkets like Villa or Gourmet Market. grab some snaps at the duty free before you land, it's gonna cost triple if you buy it locally. and bring your own flower crown or make one with your girlfriend, nobody sells those here.

if you miss the official thing, there's a bunch of scandinavian bars on Sukhumvit Soi 33 that'll have random people singing by 9pm, not traditional but you'll find a hug. just don't expect any daylight at midnight, sunset hits around 7 and it's dark by 8.

Since the big Scandinavian Society event tends to book out fast, here's a left-field option: check if any of the Finnish or Norwegian associations in town are doing something smaller that week. They sometimes piggyback on each other's calendars, and the Finnish church near Sukhumvit Soi 20 has hosted a relaxed grill-and-sing thing in past years. It's a different vibe, less maypole, more sauna talk, but you'll still find people who get why the date matters.

If you land and everything's a dead end, don't underestimate a late afternoon at Lumpini Park. Grab a bottle of something cold from the 7-Eleven on Rama IV, pick up flowers from the stalls by the MRT entrance, and just sit by the lake with your girlfriend. The monitor lizards will stare at you like you're the weirdest thing they've seen all week, which honestly fits the midsummer spirit of doing something slightly absurd and calling it tradition.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
