What's Your Experience with Thai Police? Share Your Stories Here!

I'm curious to hear about everyone's experiences with Thai police. Whether you've lived in Thailand for years or just visited, I'm sure there are plenty of stories to be told, both good and bad. I've had a few run-ins with traffic police around Asok and they've always been professional enough. The trick is to keep your cool and have your license ready, they usually just wave you on if you're not doing anything stupid. That said, I did see a guy get dragged off his motorbike on Ratchada for running a red light, so don't push your luck. The tourist police near Khao San are a different story, they're actually pretty helpful and speak decent English if you've lost your wallet or something.

Live in Thong Lo and had my wallet lifted on a bus once. Got directed to the nearest police box by a vendor and the officer there called around to a few stations for me. Didn't get it back but he was patient and even wrote down the case number in English so I could report it to my insurance. On the flip side, I've seen the same guys at the Sukhumvit 38 intersection wave through VIP-plated cars running reds while ticketing a Grab driver for stopping half a meter over the line. You get a feel for who they'll hassle and who they won't.

my mate got pulled over on sukhumvit soi 11 for not having a helmet. cop was chill, just asked for 500 baht on the spot. no paperwork, no receipt. that's just how it works here, cash in the license and you're gone. i've also seen them help a lost tourist find their way to the bts, so it's a mixed bag

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
