honestly ari hits most of those notes. the area around ari soi 1-3 has a bunch of townhouses tucked in the small streets, a big tops market right on phahonyothin road, and there's a decent fitness first at the ari hillside mall. santiphap park is small but walkable from there, maybe 10-15 mins depending where u are. it's not perfect like some planned community but it's the closest you'll get without a car in central bangkok.

ngl, ekkamai might be underrated for this. the soi 10-12 area has a ton of townhouses tucked away, villa market for groceries and the ekkamai gym at the gateway mall is solid. there's a small park at ekkamai soi 6 called suan phak that's mostly quiet and fine for kids, plus the bts is right there if u do need to go further. sidewalks are hit or miss but the sois themselves are pretty low-traffic for walking

try phra khanong. the area around w district and the bts has a lot of townhouses in the sois off sukhumvit 69-71, a big tops and foodland for groceries, and there's a decent fitness first at the w district mall. benjakitti park is a bit of a walk but doable in 20 mins, or there's a small tucked away one at the patthanawet soi. it's less polished than ari but feels more lived-in and the sidewalks are actually wide enough for a stroller in parts

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
