Apps to buy metro ticket in Bangkok ?

Hello,

I would like to take the metro but I don't want to pay by cash...

I wonder if there is an app to buy the tickets via smarthphone (and pay by card)

Thank you

The MRT and BTS both have their own official apps now, and you can buy tickets through them with a card, but the catch is you still need to scan a QR code at the gate. For the MRT, the app is called MRT Bangkok, and the BTS one is called BTS SkyTrain, both on the App Store and Play Store. If you're staying a few days, grab a Rabbit card for the BTS, it tops up at any station and you can also use it at some 7-Elevens, way easier than fiddling with the app every ride. For the MRT, the app lets you buy a ticket and then you use the QR on your phone to enter, so no physical card needed, just make sure your phone's screen is bright enough at the gate.

u can also just use the true money wallet app if u have it, it links to both bts and mrt now and u pay through the same qr gates, no need for a separate card. plus it works at a ton of street stalls and 7-eleven so it's useful beyond transit. just top it up once and ur set for the whole trip, beats carrying cash around sukhumvit late at night

honestly skip the apps unless you really need it, the QR scanning at the gates can be a pain when it's crowded. if u have a contactless bank card, just check if it has the tap to pay logo, both bts and mrt now accept it directly at the turnstiles, no app or top up needed. for the mrt especially, that's the smoothest way, you just tap and go, and it charges your card directly. just make sure u use the same card for the whole trip or it might charge u as two separate journeys.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
