Will I get weird looks if I wear high-waisted trousers with a rolled up sleeves shirt, tie, and aviator sunglasses combination to Khao San Road these days?

Hello,

I'm a History nerd and I really like the Cold War Era, esp. during around the 1970s-1980s. I found out Khao San Road in Bangkok is really a good place for me to dress up and capture 1970s-1980s aesthetic considering Thailand also played a big role in the Cold War as one of the US closest allies in SEA as well (a lot of CIA agents were activated in Bangkok and Thailand at the time).

So, I would like to know if I wear high-waisted trousers with a rolled up sleeves shirt, tie, and aviator sunglasses combination in order take a 1970s-1980s style picture (like in this exemple from Miami Vice show). Will I get weird looks since it may look too outdated? Also, no, I would definitely never wear suit or blazer in a hot humid place like BKK. Or I should just remove a tie in order to fit more in the crowded?

khao san is basically costume central, u'll blend in more than u think. half the street is in elephant pants and tank tops, the other half is backpackers who havent showered in 3 days, so a miami vice fit wont even register. honestly the tie is the only thing id reconsider, not for looks but bc ur neck will be soaked by noon, songkran or not its brutal out there. if u want the vibe without dying, ditch the tie, keep the rolled sleeves & aviators, and shoot in the morning before 10am when the light hits those shophouse facades on soi rambuttri

if u want the cold war look the background matters more than the outfit. Khao San itself is too backpacker now, but walk 5 min to Phra Athit Road along the river and you get those old shophouses, faded yellow paint, green wooden shutters, that whole 70s Bangkok vibe. shoot there around 4-5pm when the light goes sideways thru the sois. the tie is fine for photos but honestly aviators plus rolled sleeves plus a pack of Krong Thip cigarettes would read more period-correct than the tie anyway, CIA guys in BKK werent wearing neckties in that heat.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
