Thai Visas for Americans 6o days ?

anyone hear about non-visa 30 to 60 days ? anyone hear about non-visa 30 to 60 days ?
arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

yeah the 60 day thing is real, started mid july. one thing nobody mentions tho is the airline check in desk might still ask for proof of onward travel since their system shows the old 30 day rule, so have a screenshot ready or u might get hassled at the gate

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

as of july 15 it's 60 days for us passport holders, the change got published in the royal gazette around then. immigration at suvarnabhumi has been stamping 60 since, though a few people on the thai visa sub still report 30 from land borders like nong khai, so ymmv depending on where u enter. u can also extend another 30 at any immigration office for 1900 baht if u need more time

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

the 60 day stamp applies to air arrivals mostly, land crossings are still hit or miss. if u wanna be safe and skip the whole extension dance just grab a tourist visa (TR) at the embassy before u fly, that gets u 60 days and u can extend 30 more at Chaeng Wattana for 1900. downside is the paperwork and a fee but no surprises at the airport. also immigration sometimes wants to see a return ticket within 60 days now not 30, so book accordingly or u might be buying a throwaway onward flight at the gate for way too much

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
