Cost? My wife is going back to Thailand for 4 weeks. I'd like for her to pick up a year's supply or however much she can get at one time. Thank you.

The government-produced Modalert is what you'll find at most pharmacies here, not the original Provigil. Your wife can pick it up at any large chain like Fascino or Boots for around 12-15 baht per 200mg tablet, and they won't ask for a prescription. Just keep in mind that customs might give her trouble if she's carrying more than a few hundred tablets, especially if she's transiting through a strict country like Japan or Singapore on the way back. I'd recommend she stick to the pharmacies in central malls rather than the ones on random soi streets, the pricing is more consistent and they're less likely to be out of stock.

if she's near Silom there's a pharmacy on Convent Road that's been stocking it for years, the staff there are pretty chill about it. the Thai generic is called "Moda-100" and it's like 13 baht a pop, same active ingredient as Provigil just without the markup. ngl most pharmacies will sell her 200-300 tabs without blinking, especially if she says it's for her husband's shift work. just tell her to avoid the tourist-trap pharmacies near Khao San Road, they'll prob try to charge double or push something else

yeah you can get modafinil over the counter at most pharmacies in thailand, no prescription needed. cost is around 10-15 baht per pill so like 30-40 cents USD. your wife can prob buy a few hundred at a time without issues, just ask for "Modafinil" or "Provigil" at any big pharmacy like Fascino or Boots. ngl the generic ones from the government pharma work just as well as the brand name, I'd skip the fancy imports. just tell her to bring cash, some places charge extra for card.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
