Am I spending too much on rent?

I h… I will be moving to Bangkok in just a couple of weeks and still not able to decide how much to spend on rent. I make about 60k THB per month and the rent I thought I was going to spend is 10k THB. I have found a really decent place with that budget and O feel like I can afford it.

But, I have a lot of acquainances that I know who have also moved to Bangkok and they are spending 8k - 9k on rent and sharing it with another roommate. So, their rent is like 4k apiece. Some of them even make more than me.

I will be living alone for the first time in life and want to live in a pretty decent and comfortable place. But, seeing most of my peers spending like 5-10 percent of their salary on rent make me rethink about that decision and I am on the fence. Do you have any advise for me?

the difference between 4k and 10k is basically two nice dinners out a week or a few grab rides. if you're not a big spender on other stuff, 10k is totally doable on 60k. most people here spend closer to 20-30% on rent anyway, your friends are the outliers not you

one thing nobody mentions is the utility bills. when you share, you split the electric and water which in bangkok can hit 2-3k in hot months if you run ac all day. living alone that's all on you but 10k units usually have better insulation or newer ac units so it balances out maybe

if you're worried about saving, look at the other stuff. your rent is 16% of income which is fine. just don't blow the rest on partying or sukhumvit overpriced cafes and you'll be set. the peace of having your own place in a decent building with security is hard to put a price on honestly

honestly 10k for a place alone in bangkok is fine on 60k. your friends splitting 4k each are prob living in older condos or further out like on nut or something. you can get a decent studio in sukhumvit for 10k if you look around bang na or udom suk area.

ngl the peace of mind living alone is worth the extra 6k. no dealing with roommates leaving dishes or bringing people over at 2am. plus you can actually have guests over without asking permission.

just make sure the place has a decent gym or pool if that matters to u. some of those 8k shared places dont have any facilities at all. 10k gets u a proper condo with a pool and security which is nice for first time living alone.

60k is more than enough for 10k rent tbh. your friends splitting 4k are probably in older buildings without proper amenities or further out like on nut or udomsuk. you can find decent studios near ekkamai or thong lo for 10k if you look hard enough.

living alone for the first time is a big deal and 10k gives you your own space and privacy. no dealing with roommates schedules or mess. plus you'll have your own bathroom and kitchen which is huge.

just make sure the building has a pool or gym if that matters to you. some of those cheaper shared places dont have any facilities at all. 10k gets you a proper condo with security and a decent common area.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
