Visited Bangkok around 20 times but never had the typical Guy experience. Have I been doing it Wrong?

It was the classic backpacking trip and I just loved the nature, food, massages, and general feelings of goodness in Thailand.

I'm lucky enough that my job affords me the pportunity to travel to Thailand often and I must have been in Bangkok over 20 times, sometimes for 1-2 months. But I've never really had the typical guy experience here.

By this I don't mean sex tourism as I have no interest in paying for it. But I've met random travellers and guys living here regaling me with stories of how many women they've slept with, sometimes several in a night. I've heard about MDMA highs in nightclubs that I've never once visited (eg levels, RCA).

I guess my life is much more placid and less adventurous in Thailand than this ideal. I'm drawn to the country still, but when I come, I take massages, eat food, drink good coffee, visit some of my favourite beaches nearby Bangkok or further afar, and maybe check out some new neighbourhoods in the city. I work 2-4 hours most days. Does this sound like a waste of the Bangkok experience?

I've been with only 3 girls here after ten years of visiting, which makes me feel like pretty much the opposite of every other guy who spends even a fraction of the time I have here. 2 of those girls I've visited for years and been in long term relationships with. Guess I'm looking for advice as I'm already too old at 34 even if I wanted to play the field.

You're not missing anything. I've been here 15 years and the guys bragging about body counts are usually the ones who can't hold a conversation with a Thai woman outside of a bar. Your version of Bangkok is the one most expats actually live.

If you want to shift things up without chasing that scene, try the jazz bars on Sukhumvit 53 or the vinyl nights at Studio Lam on Sukhumvit 26. Good music, mixed crowd, no pressure. Or take the ferry across to Koh Kret on a weekend, it's a little island with Mon community pottery and food stalls, very few tourists.

34 is not old by any standard here. The guys who peaked at 25 in RCA are the ones who seem old now.

fwiw i think you've been having a better time than most of those guys bragging at levels. i've been bouncing around bangkok for work since 2016 and the people who talk about their "conquests" are usually the ones nursing hangovers alone at a 7-11 at 11am while you're having a proper khao tom at a place like jok prince near sukhumvit 49

the thing nobody tells you is that the guys running through girls at rca are often just filling a hole they can't name, and the ones who actually last here long term are the ones who figured out the good coffee spots and which soi has the best som tum. you've got a rhythm that works and a real connection to the city, that's way more than most people manage

try the walking street market on soi 38 near thong lo on a friday night, it's got great grilled pork and a relaxed vibe, way better than any club. or if you want a quiet drink with actual character, the bar at the top of the ari hills building has a small terrace with a view of the whole city, mostly locals and people who work in the area, no one trying to impress anyone

34 is nothing here, the guys who burned out on that scene are usually the ones who look 50 by 35. you're fine, just keep doing your thing

your bangkok sounds like the actual bangkok, not the one in travel vlogs. i've been here 8 years and the guys bragging about their nights at levels are usually the same ones who've never been to a proper thai wedding or eaten at a food court in a department store. try having lunch at the food court in terminal 21, the one on the top floor, it's cheap and legit.

if you want a different night out, skip the clubs and go to tichuca rooftop bar on a weekday around sunset, it's a bit touristy but the vibe is chill and you can actually talk to people. or hit up the outdoor bars along the river near wat phra singh, they're mostly locals and the beer is cold.

honestly at 34 you're in the sweet spot here, not too young to be annoying and not too old to be out of place. the guys who peaked at rca at 25 are the ones who seem desperate now, not you.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
