A bit unusual I know but bare with me. TLDR is: what's the process to sign up for the test, maybe a few lessons with a school in english and passsing the driving test in Bangcok?

I'll be in Bangcok in less than 30 days but I find the official sites hard to understand. I'm sure there are way to get help from someone locally for the questions etc.

PS: see comments for background if you're interested :)

if u already have a licence from home the conversion route is way less hassle than starting from zero. u need your embassy to issue a verification letter, some embassies do it same day for a fee, others take a week so start that now before u even land. then it's just the physical + colour blind test at the DLT, no driving exam. if ur licence is from a country thailand doesnt have an agreement with though u might still sit the full thing, so check that first.

Getting a Thai licence from scratch takes two days at the Department of Land Transport, and you can't just walk in and book a slot. You need to do the theory component first, which is now a video session plus a computer test, and most offices only run it on certain days. The one at Chatuchak (Mo Chit) is the busiest, so if you can get out to somewhere like Bang Khun Thian or Nonthaburi it's less of a queue.

For the English side, a driving school is worth it mainly because they handle the paperwork and can book your test slot for you. Schools around Sukhumvit charge roughly 4,000 to 6,000 baht for a package with lessons and the test arranged. Without a Thai licence or an international permit already, you'll also need a medical certificate from a clinic, which is a quick 100 to 200 baht visit.

One thing people miss: if you already hold a valid licence from your home country, you can often convert it rather than sit the full test, but that depends on your embassy providing a residence or licence verification letter. Worth checking before you commit to the school route.

the driving school route is the one to take if you want zero headache, but pick one that actually has an English instructor and not just "English available" on the website. I used a place off Ramkhamhaeng soi 24 a couple years back, they did the theory video day in English and booked my practical slot at the Bang Khun Thian office so I skipped the Mo Chit mess entirely. Cost me around 5,500 baht all in with 6 hours of lessons. Just know the practical test itself is pretty basic, a cone slalom, a stop line, and a short road loop, so don't overthink teh driving part. The paperwork and timing are the real hurdle.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
