freeze dried durian from Lazada?

Especially bulk packaged (eg 100, 500 gm altogether rather than the small 17 gm individually packeged, etc)

Most of the reviews seem to focus on "good packaging" "fast delivery", very few commenting on the quality of the product. Anyone here have rl experience and can comment?

yeah the lazada freeze dried durian game is weird because most sellers are just middlemen who never even taste the product. i found a guy at khlong toei market who told me the bulk bags on lazada often come from the same factories that supply the cheap durian chips you see in 7-eleven, just repackaged with a sticker. the texture difference is real, the good stuff should shatter when you bite it, not bend or stick to your teeth

if you want to test without wasting money, order the smallest bag from a seller that shows a clear photo of the actual product with the flesh visible, not just a generic bag image. look for ones that mention "premium grade" or "selected pieces" in the title, even if it costs a bit more. the 500g bags under 400 baht are almost always floor sweepings, no joke

also check if the seller has reviews from thai accounts, not just tourist accounts. thai buyers are way more brutal about calling out bad durian, if they say it's dry or bland, trust it. the english reviews are usually people who never ate real freeze dried durian before and don't know what they're missing

honestly the bulk durian from lazada is a gamble. I've had decent ones from "durian garden" brand where they vacuum seal the flesh in big bags, but the texture is never as good as fresh cut from a stall. the freeze dried ones from street vendors usually come from a distributor in Nonthaburi that does smaller batches, so the quality control is tighter. if you're buying 500g for cheap, expect some pieces to be a bit chewy or bland, thats just how it goes with mass production.

fwiw, I'd stick to the 100g bags first and see if the consistency is alright. the cheap stuff often uses lower grade durian that was too ripe or not ripe enough, they just dry it all together. the individual 17g packs are overpriced but at least you know each piece was selected rather than scooped from a pile.

The main difference with the cheap bulk stuff is they don't sort the durian by grade before drying. The fancy 17g packs use Monthong that's been selected at peak ripeness, while the bulk bags mix in whatever the factory got cheap that week. I've had bags where half the pieces were perfectly crunchy and sweet, and the other half tasted like stale cardboard with a hint of durian.

Check the seller's location first. If they're based in Chatuchak or Ratchada area, they're probably just a reseller who dropships from a central warehouse. The ones operating out of Nonthaburi or Pathum Thani are closer to the actual drying facilities and tend to have better turnover. Look for listings that specify "Mon Thong" or "Kanyao" variety, the generic ones that just say "freeze dried durian" are usually the lowest grade.

Start with 100g from a Nonthaburi-based seller and see how it compares to what you'd get from a street vendor. The 500g bags are almost always a mix of good pieces and broken bits that turn into powder by the time they reach you.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
