I've been getting the ropes riding my motorcycle around Bangkok for the last month with my phone in the holder navigating using Google Maps. I find myself often taking a wrong on ramp or off ramp, adding minutes to my trip and confusion. I have gotten better in the last month about choosing the right turnoffs but I am wondering if you have any helpful tips on how to stop screwing this up? Feel free to call me an idiot but even some Thai friends who have lived in Bangkok for 10 years tell me they do the same. What have you done to reduce mistakes while riding a motorcycle in Bangkok using Google Maps? Cheers

yeah youre definitely not alone, this is basically a rite of passage for riding in bkk. one thing that helped me was switching to satellite view and zooming way in before i ride, so i can actually see the physical shape of the flyover vs the road underneath. also, if youre on a bike, just take the wrong turn and do a u-turn at the next gap instead of trying to fix it mid-ride, it's almost always faster than looping around through some random soi

the trick is to stop looking at the map so much and start reading the road signs. google maps is good for general direction but it'll put you on a u-turn or service road that doesn't exist half the time. look for the big green signs with the district names and match them to where you're going, like if you're heading to on nut follow the signs for sukhumvit and then watch for the actual exit numbers.

another thing that saved me was using the "bike" mode in google maps instead of car. it routes you through more sois and avoids the expressway entirely, which is actually faster on a motorbike because you can filter through traffic. just watch out for the potholes on the smaller roads, especially around ekkamai and thong lo where they're basically craters.

if you're using google maps, try switching to satellite view for a sec before you ride. the flyovers and elevated roads cast shadows that make the exits way easier to spot. also, don't trust the voice directions for the expressway - the lady says "keep right" but the actual turn is a tiny slip road on the left, happens all the time around dindaeng and rama 9. i started tapping the screen to see the full route overview before i pull away, helps spot those bait-and-switch merges

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
