I'm a solo traveller in Bangkok and would like to meet some people but I'm staying in a hotel neaf Khao San road. I was thinking of going into the bar at Mad Monkey to socialise but not sure if it's only for people who stay there. If it's only for people in the hostel does anyone know of party hostels which have a bar open to the public?

yeah mad monkey is open to anyone, they just want people drinking there lol. if you want a different vibe, try the bar at nap park hostel on silom, it's got a rooftop and way more chill than khao san chaos

You can walk right in, they don't check room keys or anything. The bar is on the ground floor and open to anyone, though it's usually busiest with hostel guests during their evening social events around 7 or 8. If you want another option, The Backpacker on Rambuttri has a similar setup and tends to be a bit louder with more walk-in traffic from the street.

Just show up, they're not picky about who's staying there. If it's too packed try the bar at Suneta Hostel Khaosan, it's quieter but still easy to meet people.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
