if you're up for something less touristy than the usual spots, check out the talad noi area near charoen krung road. it's an old neighborhood with narrow alleys and some hidden bars, like teens of thailand which has a cool vintage vibe. grab a beer at one of the small street stalls there, the locals are friendly and it's a good way to just chat with people passing by. plus it's close to the river so you can walk along the pier after

if u wanna skip the tourist zones entirely, head to the sinakharin train market on the weekend. it's a bit far but the food is legit and theres this whole section of vintage stalls where people just hang out and drink beer on plastic chairs. way more real than khao san and u might end up sharing a table with someone wholl tell u about their life story over grilled pork skewers. i'd offer to show u around but i'm stuck working nights this month, still worth the bts ride tho

honestly if you're more into the local scene than tourist spots, head over to ari. it's a neighborhood north of chatuchak, way less packed than sukhumvit but still has solid bars and food. there's a spot called ba hao that does good cocktails and the crowd is mostly thai locals in their 30s-40s. also the bts gets you there easy so no need for a taxi

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
