Cost of living for a couple?

me & my gf do this on about 90k thb/mo combined, so roughly 2600 usd. we're in a 2br at one of the lumpini or life towers on sukhumvit, 35k. the big variable is food, if you actually eat out every meal that adds up fast, we do street food & food court lunches during the week & save the nicer restaurants for weekends. grab is sneaky expensive now too, bts/mrt for the daily commute & grab only when it rains or late night

clubbing once a month is nothing, it's the random weekend trips that blow the budget. two asia trips a year is doable if you fly airasia & book early

My wife and I spend closer to 75k thb a month and honestly the biggest saver was ditching the luxury condo requirement. We're in a nice but not flashy 2br in Phrom Phong for 22k, still walkable to everything, and that extra 15k covers most of our travel. Two Asia trips a year is very doable on that, the flights are cheap if you're flexible, it's the hotels that get you. Drinks once a month is nothing, we probably go out more than that and it barely registers.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
