Primarily looking for brands that might have manufacturing in Bangkok or Thailand, and hence are cheaper? TIA

The outlet malls here are mostly a gimmick, prices are barely better than regular stores unless there's a big sale going on. If you want the actual cheap stuff, hit up the night markets like Talad Rot Fai, loads of stalls sell "sample" pieces from Thai factories that never made it to retail, way better than hunting for a Nike store.

You won't find true factory outlets here like in the US or Europe, those big brand stores are mostly regular retail with standard prices. The real savings come from the weekend markets, particularly Chatuchak, where you'll see stalls selling "export overruns" or "factory rejects" from local garment factories, often at 30 to 50 percent less than mall prices.

For Nike and Adidas, check the Nike Factory Store at CentralWorld or the Adidas outlet at Siam Premium Outlets, but honestly the discounts are only decent during sales like Songkran or New Year. Thai-made brands like Sabina or Jaspal have better deals at their own outlets, though they're not your typical sportswear names.

If you're after proper leather goods or casual wear, head to Pratunam Market's wholesale area, where many pieces come straight from nearby factories and you can haggle hard, just buy more than one piece to get the real wholesale price. The catch is quality control is hit or miss, so inspect everything before paying.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
