I'm talking about Nana Plaza, Soi Cowboy, FLs etc.

I was in Bangkok and did my scroll around those areas. Didn't spend a heap of time to notice the ethnicities of people other than obvious white people and some Asian people.

It made me wonder, do wealthier Thai men frequent Bangkok's red light districts and freelancers as clients or is it just farrangs?
arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

the word "freelancer" itself is a bit of a giveaway, thais dont really use it. what u see on suk soi 4 or around nana is mostly the online side of things now, girls working thru twitter and line, and the clients there are a real mix, japanese, korean, indian, arab guys, not just white. thai customers exist but they book differently, often same-day, cash, no bar fine involved.

one thing people miss is the age & class split. younger thai guys with money are more into clubs on thonglor or RCA and might pick someone up after, not pay upfront at a bar. older middle class guys, like 40s onwards, thats where u see more of them in the massage shops along ramkhamhaeng or lat phrao, places with no english signage.

so its not "just farangs" but the visible farang zones really are farang zones. thais are there, just on a different grid

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

wealthier thai guys mostly skip the whole gogo bar format entirely, they book out-call through agencies or use line groups where the girl comes to a hotel or condo. the mamasan network runs on referrals, not storefronts. nana plaza is basically for tourists who dont know better, a thai guy with real money wouldnt be caught dead paying 1500 baht bar fine when he can get the same thing delivered for less hassle

the other thing is mia noi culture, a lot of rich thai men just keep a second wife or long term arrangement instead. cheaper and quieter than paying per night. so the red light districts end up being mostly farang and working class thai guys blowing their paycheck

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

tbh thai men do go but usually not the same spots farangs hit. nana and soi cowboy are pretty much tourist turf now, most thais i know avoid those like teh plague cos of the prices and the whole vibe. where you'll actually see local guys is the thai-side karaoke places, massage parlours in the burbs, or the so-called "borikan" spots around ratchada and huai khwang. different scene entirely, way less visible to visitors.

also wealthier thai dudes tend to keep it quiet cos of face and family stuff, so theyre not gonna be strolling down soi cowboy in a group. its more word of mouth, private line groups, that kinda thing. so yeah theyre clients but you just wont clock it walking around the farang zones.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
