Does JJ Market Open at Night?

Every website/travel blog seems to give complete different answers. Wondering if JJ opens in the evening as a night market on Friday/Saturday/Sunday? Which sections open? Which sections open? And what MRT station is best? Cheers, big ears!

fwiw the confusion about JJ night market probably comes from pre-covid times when friday night was actually a thing. now it's basically dead, I walked through at 7pm last month and it was creepy quiet, just a few stray dogs and some dude packing up his ceramic pots

if you really want that weekend night market energy without going all the way to srinakarin, take the MRT to Sutthisan instead of Thailand Cultural Centre. there's a smaller talad rot fai spin-off there that's less touristy, opens around 5pm and the grilled seafood is cheaper by like 30-40 baht per plate. the section with old vinyl records and vintage cameras is worth a browse too

for JJ specifically, Kamphaeng Phet exit 3 is the one, you'll walk straight into the pet section and then section 2 for clothes. just go before 3pm saturday or sunday, by 4pm half the stalls are already pulling down their tarps

yeah the friday night thing at jj is basically dead now, some stalls still open near section 26 but it's not worth a special trip. the main market is solidly a daytime thing saturday and sunday, peak chaos around 11am. if you show up at 7pm expecting lights and crowds you'll just find locked shutters and security guards

honestly just go to union mall instead, it's one stop away on the bts at ha yaek lat phrao and stays open til 10pm. way more aircon, same kind of clothes and street food vibe but indoors and less sweaty. plus you can grab dinner at the food court on the top floor, the boat noodles there are decent and like 50 baht

nah JJ Market doesn't really do the night market thing these days. It used to have a Friday night section but that's been pretty inconsistent since covid. On saturdays and sundays it's strictly daytime, like 9am to 6pm at best. Some stalls start packing up around 4pm honestly.

if you want a weekend night market vibe nearby, check out Talad Rot Fai Srinakarin instead. That one actually goes off at night, huge vintage/retro scene. Or there's the smaller one at Chatuchak Park on friday nights but it's more food trucks than shopping.

for MRT, Kamphaeng Phet station is your best bet. It drops you right at the JJ entrance, way closer than Chatuchak Park station. Just take exit 1 or 3 and you're basically there.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
