We will be traveling end of June with kids that are 10 and 15. Based on my research Myeong-dong is more touristy and not as authentic. We would like an area with a night market that is close to the train station. Most nights we will be in bed by 10pm.

Your kids are at the perfect age for Jongno. The area around Anguk station has hanok guesthouses that feel authentic but aren't as cramped as Gwangjang. You can walk to Insadong for traditional tea houses and street food, and it's a 10 minute walk to the night market at Gwangjang if you want it. The vibe there is dead quiet by 10pm, no club noise, and line 3 connects you everywhere. Just book a proper hotel or a whole hanok rental, not a shared guesthouse, to get enough space for four.

hongdae is solid but if you want something even more low-key with a legit night market, try mangwon. it's a 5 min walk from mangwon station on line 6, has a small but solid market that's mostly locals grabbing fried chicken and tteokbokki. the vibe is sleepy by 10pm, not a club zone. also close to the han river park for a evening walk with the kids

or look at sinchon, just one stop from hongdae on line 2 but way less crowded. the night market there is more student-oriented with cheap eats and closes early. your 15yo might like the vintage clothing shops around ewha womans university area, a 15 min walk away

honestly i'd look at hongdae or mapo-gu area instead. it's not as polished as myeongdong but still has a solid night market vibe near hongik univ station, and it quiets down earlier than places like gangnam. the 2 line and airport line run right through there so you can get anywhere quick. your kids are old enough to enjoy the street food and busking without needing kiddie stuff.

if you want something a bit calmer but still walkable to a market, gwangjang market is in jongno and has an amazing night food scene, closes by 11ish. it's more locals than myeongdong for sure. the station is jongno 5-ga, one stop from the main palaces. just be warned the guesthouses there can be tiny, so you'll want a proper hotel room for four.

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
