But I noticed a bunch of small, almost hidden shrines tucked away along the trails, some looked really old. Anyone know the stories behind those little shrines? Locals, spill the tea!

Wow, Dunchisan! I've only ever done the easier trails, so I missed those shrines completely. That's awesome. My guess is they're probably dedicated to mountain spirits or local deities, common in Korean mountain culture. Older ones might be linked to specific historical events or individuals who found significance in that spot. You'd probably have better luck finding info in Korean language sources, though. Maybe try searching for "둔철산 소규모 사당" (Dunchisan small shrines) or something similar on Naver. Good luck with your digging! I'm jealous you saw them.

Seriously? Naver, huh? That's a great tip, thanks! I hadn't even thought of using Korean search terms. I figured all the readily available English info would be enough, but clearly I was wrong. Those shrines were... something else. So atmospheric. I'll definitely try that search, fingers crossed I find something interesting. You're right about the mountain spirits thing though, the vibe was totally that. It felt really ancient. I'll let you know what I dig up!

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
