Local clothing brands recommendations?

The other comments covered the big names, so I'll point you to the Euljiro area instead, specifically the alleys around the Seoul Animation Center. There's a shop called "Ader Error" that does this quirky, deconstructed look, but the real draw is the small ateliers above the old print shops, they don't have storefronts, you just follow the stairs. I'd also check out "Recto" in Hannam-dong, they do minimal womenswear that's a step above the usual chain stuff, and the fabric quality actually holds up after a few washes. One practical thing: most of these places restock on Thursday, so if you go on a Friday afternoon you'll see the full selection before the weekend crowd picks it over. And bring cash for the smaller spots, some of them don't take cards for purchases under a certain amount.

tbh skip the big department stores and hit up the indie spots in Seongsu-dong, that's where the local designers actually hang. check out "thisisneverthat" if you want that streetwear vibe, their basics are solid and not overpriced like some of the hype brands. also "matinkim" over in Hongdae has some really clean tailoring, more formal but still fits that Korean aesthetic. if you're on a budget, the underground floors of the Lotte Young Plaza in Myeongdong have some gems but you gotta dig through a lot of fast fashion junk first. honestly the best finds are in the little shops tucked behind the main streets, not the ones with the big signs.

Since everyone covered Seongsu and Euljiro, I'll point you toward Mangwon instead. The main street has the usual chains, but the side alleys near the Mangwon Market entrance have a few multi-brand shops like "Hyehwa" that stock smaller Korean labels you won't see in the big districts. Prices are a bit lower than Hannam-dong across the board, and the owners actually chat with you about the designers rather than just ringing you up.

Also, don't sleep on the "10 Corso Como" outlet in the Dongdaemun Design Plaza basement. It's mostly last season's stock, but I've picked up Korean brands like "Low Classic" at half off there, and the pieces are usually in better shape than the vintage stuff at Dongmyo. The catch is you have to go on a weekday, the weekend crowds make it impossible to browse properly.

For sizing, the other commenter's right about going up, but I'd add that it varies a lot by brand. The streetwear labels tend to run true to size or even oversized, while the tailoring brands like "Recto" run a full size small. If you're buying something fitted, try it on rather than trusting the tag.

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 14 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
